La Bâtie - Festival de Genève goes back to 1977. In June of that year its founders moved onto a wooded site near the centre of town, the Bois de la Bâtie, which gave the event its name. Although the first festival properly speaking took place in 1977, it gradually evolved in parallel with the decade in a series of free events that followed upon each other since roughly 1970. Their approach was global, combining politics, culture and social issues, and aimed to use all available means to question the existing order of things and upset official cultural policy with its yen for institutional choices and established artists, for prestige and traditional aesthetics.

The festival continued to develop and fine- tune its message. Both avant- garde and popular, culturally inquisitive and fun- oriented, its program mixes emerging artists and established figures from the contemporary international scene. It commissions certain performances, inspires projects and coproduces events with both swiss and international artists and cultural structures. It proposes workshops, discussions with the artists, and acts as an interface between art and other areas of human activity. Open to all possibilities, La Bâtie - Festival de Genève is now one of the major mixed media cultural events in Switzerland.
