Geneva as Swiss Canton and Republic

The Republique et Canton de Geneve is the formal name of the Republic and Canton of Geneva. It is called Region Genf (its German name) but is considered a state of Switzerland. Though Geneva used to be a hotspot of the Protestant Reformation movement, there are actually more Catholics than Protestants here now. But Geneva is still generally considered still a Protestant canton.

Private banking is a cornerstone of Geneva's economy with many major Swiss banks based here. The International Labour Organization, and the United Nations, also have their headquarters in Geneva. Swiss watch making is also a Geneva industry.
